Although there are currently no plans for the third season of The Haunting, Mike Flanagan is not dismissing the idea of it together. There is still hope for a third season in the future if the right conditions are met. While promoting his upcoming limited series Midnight Mass, Flanagan said in an interview with Entertainment Weekly, that for the third season to happen he and his producer partner Trevor Macy would need to find the right piece of literature to make another season of the series.
When the question about the current plans of the third season of The Haunting was asked, Flanagan repeated what he said last December: a third season of the anthology series is not currently in his plans, and then Flanagan added that it could eventually happen if he and Macy find the right piece of literature. As Flanagan says that, “one of the things that define the Haunting anthology for me is that both of them so far are about updating and riffing on existing classic literature.”
Choosing a book for the third season of the series is not as easy as it sounds because the third season of The Haunting has to also carry the theme of its previous seasons that ghosts are the materialization of human trauma and regrets. The filmmaker also adds that “it would have to be with the right piece of IP, it would have to be with the right ghost-centric story, and it would have to really fit with Bly and Hill House.”
The first season of The Haunting titled The Haunting of Hill House, released in 2018 and it was based on Shirley Jackson‘s gothic horror novel of the same name and then the second season titled The Haunting of Bly Manor was released in 2020 and it was based on Henry James‘ The Turn of the Screw. Let’s hope for the best for The Haunting Season 3.
