The Barbenheimer week is finally here, and it seems both of them have opened huge, first through their previews on Thursday night and midway through Friday. Directed by Greta Gerwig, Barbie could have the biggest opening of the year with its $22.3 million in previews, and it is set to hit around $68 to $70 million, which could result in its opening weekend projections of $150 million to $170 million to become true. If everything goes according to Barbie, it could beat the numbers of The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which opened at $146.6 million.
While Barbie is doing great at the box office, that doesn’t mean that Christopher Nolan’s epic biopic drama Oppenheimer is suffering at the box office because Oppenheimer took $10.5 million in the previews, and is expected to hit around $32 million on its opening day. Oppenheimer is projected to earn $75 million in the opening weekend.
Barbie’s great performance in comparison to Oppenheimer has many reasons. The first one is that it has opened in more theaters than the biopic drama with Barbie opening in 4,243 theaters and Oppenheimer opening in 3,610 theaters. Than Barbie is over an hour shorter than Oppenheimer, which means that it will have more screenings in a day and at last Barbie is just a fun viewing, while Oppenheimer emotionally exhausts the audience, and because of its themes and brilliant imagery, it even manages to haunt the audience even after they have finished watching the flick.
Gerwig’s Barbie also has one of the most stacked casts of any film coming out in 2023. Margot Robbie leads the brilliant ensemble cast as Barbie, which includes Ryan Gosling, Will Ferrell, Simu Liu, Issa Rae, Emma Mackey, Michael Cera, Kate McKinnon, America Ferrera, Ariana Greenblatt, Emerald Fennell, Ncuti Gatwa, and many more.
