The sci-fi genre has always been one of the most beloved among cinephiles as it gives us a new look at a particular technology or our world. There was a time when Max (formerly known as HBO Max) was the place for peak sci-fi shows but after taking off Westworld and Raised by Wolves from the service, and since then it has been lacking a bit regarding sci-fi shows. But still, we picked the seven best sci-fi shows that we could find on Max.

Avenue 5

Avenue 5 is a sci-fi dark comedy series created by Armando Iannucci. The Max series is set in the future and mostly in space and it follows the story of the crew and passengers on board the interplanetary cruise ship named Avenue 5. A little mistake and the death of its chief engineer causes Avenue 5 to veer 0.21 degrees off course which results in the delay of 3 years before the passengers can get home. Limited supplies, big egos, and a fake captain make this space journey really hilarious. HBO canceled this gem after its second season, so don’t expect a resolution for every storyline. Avenue 5 stars Hugh Laurie in the lead role with Josh Gad, Zach Woods, Rebecca Front, Suzy Nakamura, Lenora Crichlow, Nikki Amuka-Bird, and Ethan Phillips starring in supporting roles.

Falling Skies

Falling Skies is a post-apocalyptic sci-fi series created by Robert Rodat and executive produced by Steven Spielberg. The TNT series begins its story six months after an alien invasion which left most of the world on the brink of destruction as the Mason family tries to survive they soon form a group called the Second Massachusetts to fight back against the aliens. Falling Skies stars Noah Wyle in the lead role with Drew Roy, Maxim Knight, Moon Bloodgood, Sarah Carter, Connor Jessup, Colin Cunningham, Doug Jones, Will Patton, Scarlett Byrne, Mpho Koaho, and Seychelle Gabriel starring in supporting roles.

Fringe

Fringe is a sci-fi procedural series created by J.J. Abrams, Alex Kurtzman, and Roberto Orci. The Fox series follows the story of FBI special agent Olivia Dunham who must work together a mad but brilliant scientist Walter Bishop and his son Peter Bishop to investigate various cases involving fringe science. Fringe stars Anna Torv, John Noble, and Joshua Jackson in the lead roles with Jasika Nicole, Lance Reddick, Kirk Acevedo, Blair Brown, Mark Valley, Michael Cerveris, Seth Gabel, Megan, Duchess of Sussex, and Kevin Corrigan starring in supporting roles.

Rick and Morty

Rick and Morty is an adult animated sci-fi comedy series created by Justin Roiland and Dan Harmon. The Adult Swim series follows the story of Rick, an alcoholic sociopath who happens to be the most intelligent person on the planet as he lives with his daughter Beth’s family and goes on various life-threatening but hilarious adventures with his grandson Morty. Rick and Morty’s voice cast includes Roiland, Harmon, Spencer Grammer, Chris Parnell, Sarah Chalke, Kari Wahlgren, Maurice LaMarche, Tom Kenny, Brandon Johnson, and Ryan Ridley.

Scavengers Reign

Scavengers Reign is an adult animated sci-fi drama series created by Joseph Bennett and Charles Huettner. The Max series follows the story of the crew of an interstellar cargo ship named Demeter 227 after it was damaged leaving the crew stranded on a beautiful but dangerous planet. Max canceled Scavengers Reign after its first season but Netflix acquired it, so there is still hope for a Season 2. Scavengers Reign’s voice cast includes Sunita Mani, Wunmi Mosaku, Alia Shawkat, Bob Stephenson, and Ted Travelstead.

Torchwood

Torchwood is a British sci-fi drama series created by Russell T Davies. The Starz series serves as a spin-off of the long-running British sci-fi series Doctor Who and it follows a team of alien hunters who form a group called the Torchwood to deal with cases involving the extraterrestrials. Torchwood stars Eve Myles, John Barrowman, Burn Gorman, Gareth David-Lloyd, Naoko Mori, Kai Owen, Alexa Havins, Tom Price, Freema Agyeman, Mekhi Phifer, and Lauren Ambrose.

Years and Years

Years and Years is a dystopian sci-fi drama miniseries created by Russell T Davies. The six-part HBO miniseries is set over the course of 15 years and it follows the story of the Lyons family as their world completely changes in 2019 when an outspoken and controversial businesswoman turns into a politician who completely destroys the economy and hopes for the people of the U.K. over the course of 15 years. Years and Years stars Rory Kinnear, Russell Tovey, Jessica Hynes, Ruth Madeley, T’Nia Miller, Anne Reid, and Emma Thompson.
