Adapting the novel Dune, is a challenge, to say the least, and for the few filmmakers who have attempted to adapt Dune in the past, their results have been uniquely interesting. The first Dune adaptation was attempted by the eccentric director Alejandro Jodorowsky featuring Pink Floyd, who proposed an adaptation of the novel back in the 1970s with his version.

Similarly, director David Lynch‘s adaptation of Frank Herbert’s sci-fi epic produced a cult classic with its so bad that its good quality of the film. The 1984 film starred Sean Young as Chani.

This proves that making a Dune adaptation is no easy task, and Villeneuve revealed that he only agreed to make the film if he could split the book into two parts, and make a sequel to his version of Dune film. So, Dune 2 is definitely in the works.

Dune writer Eric Roth who wrote the film with Villeneuve and Spaihts, also wrote a treatment for a Dune sequel, when he developed the script for the first film, but as far as anybody knows Spaihts is the writer on Dune 2.

Even though it was announced that a sequel for Dune was in the works in the past, now Villeneuve has cast some doubt on the possibility of it happening because of his unhappiness when Warner Bros. announced that they will release Dune both on HBO Max and in theaters at the same time which makes the possibility of people going to the theater very low. Villeneuve said this about the subject:

“Streaming can produce great content, but not movies of Dune’s scope and scale. Warner Bros.’ decision means Dune won’t have the chance to perform financially in order to be viable and piracy will ultimately triumph. Warner Bros. might just have killed the Dune franchise. ‘This one is for the fans.’ AT&T’s John Stankey said that the streaming horse left the barn. In truth, the horse left the barn for the slaughterhouse.”

We will keep updating on the latest news about Dune 2 as they become available but for now, Dune is nearly here with the film premiering on October 22 in theaters and on HBO Max at the same time.
