A sequel for Gladiator was officially greenlit by Paramount in November 2018, and now the director Ridley Scott has confirmed that the script for the sequel is now finished. Scott has seen the release of two major films this year which include The Last Duel and House of Gucci, and now he will be working on the next chapter of Gladiator. The script of the sequel is written by Peter Craig (The Batman), and the film will follow Lucius, who was played by Spencer Treat Clark in the 2000 film.
Gladiator 2 will begin production after Kitbag, the next film Scott is set to direct. Kitbag will tell the story of Napolean Bonaparte, and it will star Joaquin Phoenix as the French leader. Scott said this to Deadline about the Gladiator sequel:
“Oh, it’s been written. It’s already been written. We have a good footprint, a good, logical place to go. You can’t just do another Gladiator type movie. You’ve got to follow…there’s enough components from the first one to pick up the ball and continue it.”
The sequel will follow Lucius, the son of Lucilla (Connie Nielsen), and it will be set after 25-30 years from the events of the first film. Maximus (Russell Crowe) is still expected to feature in the upcoming film even though he died at the end of the first film.
There is no current release date for Gladiator 2, and but Scott’s next film House of Gucci will be coming to theaters on November 24.
