James Gunn has finally revealed that the much anticipated MCU’s upcoming film Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 has started filming. The director announced the news via social media. The tweet by Gunn features a picture of Gunn, who is both the writer and the director of the film, with Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldaña, Dave Bautista, Karen Gillan, Pom Klementieff, and Sean Gunn, who have all appeared in the previous Guardians of the Galaxy films, the image also features Will Poulter, who has recently joined the upcoming film as Adam Warlock and Chukwudi Iwuji, who is going to be appearing in Gunn’s upcoming DC series Peacemaker but his role in the MCU film is not yet known.
In the tweet, Gunn says:
“It’s been a strange & long & at times challenging journey to get here, but the obstacles along the way have only made this moment more blissful. Back on set with my Guardians family for the first day of shooting #gotgvol3”
The wait for the third Guardians of the Galaxy film has been a long one, as Gunn himself says in the tweet. The third installment in the franchise was announced back in April 2017, before the release of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, and then in January 2018, Gunn revealed that the third film will be coming out in 2020. However, the production on the film was halted when Gunn was publicly fired in July later that same year, following the surfacing of some old tweets by Gunn. The production on the was then finally got back on track in March 2019, when Gunn was rehired. The plot of the upcoming film is not yet known but we do know that Poulter will be playing the role of Adam Warlock, as it was teased by Elizabeth Debicki‘s Ayesha in the post-credit scene of GOTG Vol. 2.
Along with GOTG Vol. 3, Gunn is also working with Marvel to write and direct the Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special, which will be coming to Disney+ in December of 2022, and he will also serve as an executive producer on the Disney+ series I Am Groot, which is about the Guardians character.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 cast also includes Bradley Cooper as the voice of Rocket and Vin Diesel as the voice of Groot. The film is coming to theaters on May 5, 2023. Check out Gunn’s tweet below:
