Kevin Hart is back with another Netflix film but this time instead of a comedy we see him as a master thief. Directed by F. Gary Gray, the Netflix film Lift revolves around a group of thieves who join hands with Interpol to get immunity for their past crime, but to do that they have to steal half a billion dollars worth of gold from a flying airplane without being caught by the owner of the gold, who is surprise surprise the bad guy. Lift also stars Úrsula Corberó, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Sam Worthington, Billy Magnussen, Kim Yoon-ji, Jean Reno, and Vincent D’Onofrio starring in supporting roles. So, if you loved Lift and all of its action here are some similar films you could watch next.
The Italian Job (Paramount+ & Prime Video Add-On)
From the same director and in the same genre as Lift, this film deserves to be on this list. Directed by F. Gary Gray, the heist film revolves around John Bridger’s team of thieves who are betrayed by one of their own during a heist which results in Bridger’s death. Now, Charlie convinces Bridger’s daughter to join hands with him to get the crew back together and get their revenge. The Italian Job stars Mark Wahlberg, Jason Statham, Edward Norton, Charlize Theron, Donald Sutherland, Seth Green, and Franky G.
Red Notice (Netflix)
Until I didn’t get any Ryan Reynolds or Dwyane Jhonson’s cameo in Life, I thought it could easily be a part of a Heist Film Universe that Netflix is secretly creating and that’s the reason behind Red Notice being on this list. The star-studded heist action-adventure film revolves around an art thief and an Interpol agent who join hands to take down a mysterious master thief, while the art thief also tries to steal Cleopatra’s three bejeweled eggs. Written and Directed by Rawson Marshall Thurber, the Netflix original film stars Reynolds, Johnson, and Gal Gadot in leading roles.
Ocean’s Eleven (Peacock & Rent on Prime Video)
One of the most popular films in the heist genre is Ocean’s Eleven, which follows many of the similar tropes you see in Lift. Directed by Steven Soderbergh, the star-studded film revolves around a recently paroled master thief Danny Ocean, who comes up with a plan to steal millions of dollars from the three biggest casinos in Las Vegas but to do that he has to recruit a team of people who are at the top of their game. Ocean’s Eleven stars George Clooney in the lead role with Brad Pitt, Julia Roberts, Matt Damon, Andy Garcia, Bernie Mac, Casey Affleck, Elliott Gould, Carl Reiner, and Scott Caan starring in supporting rules.
6 Underground (Netflix)
While Netflix’s 6 Underground is not exactly a heist film it does follow many of the same tropes and it also has the same humorous tone as Red Notice and Lift. Directed by Michael Bay, the action-adventure film revolves around a group of people who have died in the public eye but secretly they are trying to take down a ruthless dictator who can’t be touched by any of the world’s government or authorities. The Netflix original film stars Ryan Reynolds in the lead role with Mélanie Laurent, Adria Arjona, Manuel Garcia-Rulfo, Ben Hardy, Corey Hawkins, and Dave Franco starring in supporting roles.
Chor Nikal Ke Bhaga (Netflix)
Another Netflix original heist film that takes place in the air is Chor Nikal Ke Bhaga. The Hindi language film revolves around a flight attendant and her boyfriend who decide to steal diamonds from a plane to pay back their debt but their plan goes wrong and what was supposed to be a heist turns into a hijacking. Directed by Ajay Singh, the Netflix original film stars Yami Gautam and Sunny Kaushal in the lead roles with Sarah Khatri, Indraneil Sengupta, Sharad Kelkar, and Priyanka Karunakaran starring in supporting roles.
Logan Lucky (Rent on Prime Video)
The other Steven Soderbergh heist film is Logan Lucky, which might not be as popular as Ocean’s Eleven, but it is very entertaining. Logan Lucky revolves around Jimmy Logan, a former employee at a tunnel construction site who decides to steal millions of dollars from his underground pneumatic tube system knowledge with the help of friends. The film stars Channing Tatum in the lead role with Daniel Craig, Adam Driver, Riley Keough, Hilary Swank, Jack Quaid, Katherine Waterston, Sebastian Stan, Brian Gleeson, and Katie Holmes starring in supporting roles.
Tower Heist (Rent on Prime Video)
Tower Heist is a heist film directed by Brett Ratner from a screenplay by Ted Griffin and Jeff Nathanson. Unlike Lift or Ocean Eleven, the story of this film revolves around a group of middle-class people working for an exclusive apartment building who lose their pension money because of a Ponzi scheme run by a Wall Street businessman living in the building. In turn, they decide to steal the money he is hiding from the authorities. Starring Ben Stiller in the lead role with Eddie Murphy, Casey Affleck, Alan Alda, Matthew Broderick, Stephen McKinley, Henderson, and Judd Hirsch starring in supporting roles.
Fast Five (Prime Video)
The fifth installment in Fast & Furious is generally considered to be the best one in the entire franchise and luckily it is a heist that has many similar elements to Lift. Fast Five sees the gang coming together to steal a big vault full of cash that belongs to a dangerous criminal, but the problem is that it is located right underneath the police station filled with corrupt cops who are in the villain’s pocket. Fast Five has an incredible ensemble cast including Paul Walker, Vin Diesel, Dwyane Johnson, Jordana Brewster, Gal Gadot, Elsa Pataky, Ludacris, Sung Kang, Tyrese Gibson, and many more.
Heat (Netflix, Hulu & Rent on Prime Video)
If we just look at the beginning of Lift, the classic heist film Heat directed by Michael Mann is very similar to the new Netflix heist film. Heat revolves around a professional thief McCauley who wants to pull off his one last heist before retirement but the only problem he is under constant surveillance by a police detective Hanna. Starring the legends Robert De Niro, Al Pacino, and Val Kilmer in the film Heat is still considered to be one of the best films in the genre.
The Hitman’s Bodyguard (Prime Video)
The Hitman’s Bodyguard is not exactly a heist film but it does kind of have the same storyline as Lift, and it’s also quite funny. Directed by Patrick Hughes, the action comedy film revolves around a AAA protection agent who loses everything after a high-profile client is assassinated in his protection. He gets a second chance to get to the top once again but that chance is coming from his ex-girlfriend who he thinks is the one behind his fall from the grace and the job he is given is protecting one of the most dangerous assassins in the world, who has tried to kill him multiple times in the past. The Hitman’s Bodyguard stars the brilliant comedic duo of Ryan Reynolds and Samuel L. Jackson in the leading role with Elodie Yung, Salma Hayek, and Gary Oldman starring in supporting roles.
