Netflix has been on a bender canceling many shows in the last year including The Midnight Club and Warrior Nun, and now it seems the tradition is continuing into the new year with the streaming giant canceling the Dark series creators’ new series 1899 after only a single season.

The co-showrunner of the series Baran bo Odar and Jantje Friese announced the sad news on Instagram by saying “With a heavy heart we have to tell you that 1899 will not be renewed. We would have loved to finish this incredible journey with a 2nd and 3rd season as we did with Dark. But sometimes things don’t turn out the way you planned.

1899 featured multiple mysteries, symbols and artifacts, important dates, and above all gloomy cinematography. While the series does look Dark in some ways its story seems to be completely different and fresh. So, the fans of the sci-fi series Dark were certainly not disappointed.

1899 is a multilingual series and its cast includes Anton Lesser (Game of Thrones), Alexandre Willaume (The Wheel of Time), Lucas Lynggaard Tønnesen (The Rain), Clara Rosager (Morbius), Jonas Bloquet (Elle), Miguel Bernardeau (Elite), Richard Hope (Broadchurch), and Mathilde Ollivier (Overlord).
