2023 was a very turbulent time for Max (formerly known as HBO Max), as many of HBO’s original shows were licensed to other streaming services, and many others were canceled. While January is not filled with prestige TV or movies for Max subscribers, you will find the release of a much-awaited new season of True Country and some entertaining movies. So, here are the best movies and TV shows you can watch on Max in January 2024.

Our Idiot Brother (January 1)

Our Idiot Brother is a criminally underrated film directed by Jesse Peretz. The comedy-drama film revolves around the Rochlin siblings, including Ned and his three sisters. When Ned gets arrested for selling pot, after his release all of his sisters try to keep him in their houses with their families and friends but Ned’s personality always gets in the way maybe what the Rochlin sisters are missing in their lives is exactly what Ned is bringing. Our Idiot Brother has an impressive cast with Paul Rudd starring in the lead role of Ned with Elizabeth Banks, Zooey Deschanel, Emily Mortimer, Rashida Jones, Adam Scott, Kathryn Hahn, and Steve Coogan.

Ted 2 (January 1)

Ted 2 is a sequel to one of the best adult comedies that look like it was for kids and while it doesn’t hold a candle to the first film, Ted 2 is still entertaining and beloved by the fans. The 2015 sequel film once again revolves around John Bennett and his talking bear Ted, but in this film we see Ted fighting for his rights as an American citizen when the court declares him a property and not a person. Mark Wahlberg returns as John Bennett with Seth MacFarlane once again voicing Ted. Ted 2 also starred Amanda Seyfried and Jessica Barth in the main cast of the film.

The Breakfast Club (January 1)

The Breakfast Club is one of the most quotable and iconic films of all time. The coming-of-age film is written and directed by John Hughes, and it revolves around five high school students, who are completely different from each other but on a Saturday morning during detention they all come together in the library and become friends. The 1986 film features the hit and now iconic song Don’t You (Forget About Me), and it stars Judd Nelson, Molly Ringwald, Ally Sheedy, Anthony Michael Hall, and Emilio Estevez in the lead roles.

True Detective: Night Country (January 14)

The much-anticipated new season of HBO’s hit series True Detective is finally coming to Max this month. The new season is titled Night Country and with a whole new cast and a new showrunner, True Detective Season 4 is off to a great start as many of the fans have been waiting for the new season to come out for almost five years. Night Country is set in Alaska and revolves around the case of six missing men who vanished without a trace while operating the Tsalal Arctic Research Station, the case is being investigated by Detectives Liz and Evangeline. Night Country stars Jodie Foster and Kali Reis in the lead roles with John Hawkes, Christopher Eccleston, Fiona Shaw, Finn Bennett, and Anna Lambe starring in supporting roles.
