Oppenheimer is blowing past all expectations, as it already made an impressive debut at both domestic and international box office and it seems to be continuing the trend in its second week. The Christopher Nolan three-hour-long biopic about J. Robert Oppenheimer was released yesterday with Gerta Gerwig‘s Barbie, and the audience is super-excited for both of the films, making The Barbenheimer the greatest double feature of recent times. The proof of that is The Barbenheimer have collected over $1 billion together at the worldwide box office.
Nobody really how the Barbenheimer would end up, but it seems that it’s a big win for the film industry with Barbie dominating the box with its worldwide collection of $774 million. Despite Barbie’s fierce competition, Oppenheimer is still doing better than anyone expected it to with its domestic collection of $46 and international collection of $72 million in its second week. After adding up the first week’s collections, Oppenheimer has earned $174 million domestically and $226 million internationally, making a total of $400 million.
The goal of $500 million for Oppenheimer doesn’t seem like a big thing anymore as it is still going strong in theaters resulting in the extension of its run in IMAX theaters. Oppenheimer only saw a 44% revenue drop in its second week, while Barbie’s revenue drop was slightly less. These revenue drops seemingly prove that the era of blockbusters is coming back as these kinds of low revenue drops are very few and far between in recent times.
Oppenheimer technically started out with certain disadvantages when it comes to earning at the box office, especially when compared to its competition Barbie. Even with the glowing critical reviews the epic biopic film has a three-hour long runtime which means that it will have fewer screenings, the film is also quite dark and really challenges the audience when sometimes the masses only want an easy flick to pass their time. But because of the sheer brilliance of the film and the name Nolan made for himself, helped the film in a big way at the box office.
Based on the Pulitzer Prize Winning novel American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer by Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin, the Christopher Nolan film follows one of the biggest stories in the history of the modern world.
Oppenheimer’s ensemble cast has to be one of the most stacked casts of all time. Led by Nolan’s longtime collaborator Cillian Murphy as Oppenheimer, the ensemble cast includes Robert Downey Jr. as Lewis Strauss, Emily Blunt as Kitty Oppenheimer, Matt Damon as Leslie Groves, Florence Pugh as Jean Tatlock, Rami Malek as David Hill, Dane DeHaan as Kenneth Nicholds, Jack Quaid as Richard Feynman, and frankly too many more to mention.
Oppenheimer is exclusively playing in theaters for quite some time. So, don’t wait for it to come on streaming, and Book You Tickets Now!
