The hilarious HBO comedy series The Righteous Gemstones has no shortage of strained relationships and of them is Eli (John Goodman) and Judy’s (Edi Patterson) which has to be one of the most complex and funny father-daughter relationships we have ever seen on television. In the series Jesse (Danny McBride), the eldest son, and Kelvin (Adam DeVine), the youth pastor are the dealing with church’s inner workings, Judy, the daughter is handed off the secretary position which in turn leaves a huge chip on her shoulder and combine that with how vulgarly she speaks it is comedy gold, but its also a big problem for Eli, who still shows compassion for his attention-seeking daughter.
During an interview with EW, the comedy series stars Goodman and Patterson explain the hilariously broken relationship between their characters. Patterson says that “I love that lopsided dynamic,” she is also a writer on the series. Read the full quote by Patterson below:
“I love that lopsided dynamic. I feel like, as screwed up as she is, Judy would do anything to make him proud and make him happy. With that desperation, I think there’s a ton of heart and comedy that can live inside of that.”
