Sweet Home is an apocalyptical action-drama series created by Kim Seol-jin. The Netflix series is based on a Naver webtoon of the same name by Kim Carnby and Hwang Young-chan, and it revolves around Cha Hyun-soo, and his neighbors as they fight for their survival after monsters begin appearing. Cha Hyun-soo finds out that he has the monster gene but he can control his transformation and with this newfound power, he chooses to save what’s left of humanity. Sweet Home stars Song Kang in the lead role with Lee Jin-wook and Lee Si-young starring in supporting roles. Attack on Titan (Crunchyroll, Hulu & Prime Video Add-On)
The popularity of this anime series is worldwide and thankfully the story and characters of the series are pretty similar. Based on a manga series of the same name by Hajime Isayama, Attack on Titan is set in a world that is on the brink of destruction because of the constant attacks by titans (mindless giants who eat humans). Humans protect themselves through giant walls that keep the Titans out. The story follows Eren Yeager after his village is attacked by Titans, and he grows up filled with vengeance and a desperate desire to rid the Earth of all Titans. While we won’t spoil some big reveals for you, believe us that Sweet Home has many similar characters and storylines to Attack on Titans.
Hellbound (Netflix)
Hellbound is another brilliant Netflix Korean series that is filled up with monsters, gods, and wacko humans. The Netflix series is set in a world where unearthly beings appear in the middle of Seoul to kill the condemned in brutal burnings. Through the smoke rises the voice of an up-and-coming religious cult leader who believes that these beings will wake humanity more righteous and just. But some people oppose this idea and just want to live as humans without the fear of a brutal death. Based on a webtoon of the same name by Yeon Sang-ho, who is also behind directing the series. Hellbound has the same sense of dread and tragedy that exists in Sweet Home.
Stranger Things (Netflix)
Stranger Things is one of the most popular fantasy monster series ever made and because of that many people might not be able to draw comparisons between it and Sweet Home. But monster attacks that are the result of government experiments and a savior with special powers. Created by the Duffer brothers, Stranger Things is set in the 80s and it revolves around a group of adventurous kids who want to find their missing friend, and helping them is a mysterious girl with powers who doesn’t even remember her name. With an all-star cast including Millie Bobby Brown, Finn Wolfhard, Joe Keery, Winona Ryder, David Harbour, Natalia Dyer, Charlie Heaton, Sadie Sink, Noah Schnapp, and Caleb McLaughlin.
All of Us Are Dead (Netflix)
All of Us Are Dead is an action-filled zombie series created by Chun Sung-il, Lee Jae-kyoo, and Kim Nam-su. Based on a webtoon of the same name by Joo Dong-geun, the Netflix series revolves around a group of students who are stuck in their high school while a zombie apocalypse goes around them. All of Us Are Dead is similar to Sweet Home in some of its aspects such as its series is set in a confined space and the story follows a group of characters who are fighting for their survival with everything they have.
Kingdom (Netflix)
Kingdom is a Korean period zombie series created by Kim Eun-hee. The Netflix series is set during the 16th century and it revolves around Lee Chang, the Crown Prince of Joseon, who desperately wants to find out the truth behind the mysterious illness that afflicting the King. This illness makes the afflicted lose their mind and hunger for human flesh. Based on a webtoon series titled The Kingdom of the Gods by Kim Eun-hee and Yang Kyung-il.
The Last of Us (Max & Prime Video Add-On)
One of the best video game adaptations ever made, this HBO series has won the hearts of millions through its nuanced storytelling and incredible world-building. Based on a video game series of the same name, The Last of Us is set 20 years after the modern civilization has been destroyed because of a mysterious virus that makes the afflicted some kind of zombies. The HBO series follows the story of Joel, a survivor who has been hired to smuggle a girl named Elle, out of an oppressive quarantine zone. The Last of Us stars Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey in the lead roles of Joel and Elle.
Z Nation (Rent on Prime Video)
Z Nation is a survival horror series created by Karl Schaefer and Craig Engler. The Syfy series is set in a world where a zombie virus had destroyed the world but several years later there is still hope as one man known only as Murphy, who survived the infection. Now, a ragtag group of survivors must band together to transport him to the West Coast, where the last functioning lab is located to create a vaccine using Murphy’s blood. Z Nation is much more similar to Sweet Home in its second season than its first.
Resident Evil (Netflix)
Based on the top-rated video game series of the same name, Netflix’s Resident Evil series is set in the year 2036. Nearly 14 years after the virus afflicted so much pain people, we follow the story of Jade Wesker as she fights for her survival while her past still haunts her. Resident Evil is not as good as Sweet Home but the lore and story behind the series is worth watching.
The Rain (Netflix)
The Rain is a Danish post-apocalyptic series with some coming-of-age and romantic elements that you will find entertaining. The Netflix series is set in a world that has been destroyed because of a rain-carried virus and six years later we follow two brothers who leave the safety of their bunker to find signs of life. In this dangerous quest of theirs, they are joined by a group of young survivors. The Rain is much less dark than Sweet Home but it also shows some coming-of-age characters who are just working out where they stand in this dangerous new world.
Swamp Thing (Rent on Prime Video & Tubi)
Based on the DC comic of the same name by Lee Wein, Bernie Wrightson, and Alan Moore, Swamp Thing is a superhero horror series and it revolves around Abby Arcane, who returns to her hometown where she develops a bond with a disgraced scientist named Alec Holland. Abby first comes to Marais, to investigate a deadly swamp-borne virus but after the death of Alec Holland, she discovers the mysteries behind the virus and finds a creature who claims to be Alec. Swamp Thing stars Crystal Reed, Virginia Madsen, and Andy Bean.
