All of The Last Kingdom fans have just gotten the great news that a film featuring the series’ characters titled Seven Kings Must Die is in the works at Netflix. Production on the film will begin early next year, shortly before the premiere of the 10 part final season of The Last Kingdom.
Deadline broke the news and said that the announcement was made by Alexander Dreymon who plays the role of Uhtred and executive producers on the historical drama, at London MCM Comic-Con. Filming on the two-hour feature is set to begin early next year in Budapest.
Dreymon will reprise his role in the film along with castmates from the series and some new faces. While talking about the film producer Nigel Marchant said that while season five “fully concludes the series, there was always one more story that we wanted to tell.”
Dreymon also talked about his experience on the series by saying: “It’s been such a privilege to tell Uhtred’s story for five seasons. I’m so grateful to our fans. They have been immensely loyal to The Last Kingdom and thanks to their support, the team is getting together for another round.”
The Last Kingdom is based on Bernard Cornwell‘s Saxon Stories, and the series was originally commissioned by BBC2 and aired its first season in 2015, but after that Netflix came on board to co-produce the second season, and then took full rights from season three ownwards. It was revealed in April that Season 5 will be the final season of the series.
The Last Kingdom (Official Synopsis): As Alfred the Great defends his kingdom from Norse invaders, Uhtred — born a Saxon but raised by Vikings — seeks to claim his ancestral birthright.
